STARTING XI – FEB 27th-28th
Pepe Reina – (Liverpool) – Pepe Reina had a double-save from Morten Gamst Pedersen during the first half, and was unlucky not to save a penalty kick later on from Keith Andrews. During injury time, Reina had an amazing full-stretched save. He would ensured Liverpool to take all 3 points in their 2-1 victory over Blackburn.
Defenders:
Maicon – (Inter Milan) – Maicon netted an impressive goal during Inter Milan’s 3-2 victory over Udinese and had an all around dangerous wingback play. Maicon’s play would help Inter Milan further secure their top spot in Serie A with a total of 58 league points.
Ezequiel Garay – (Real Madrid) – Ezequiel Garay had an absolutely fantastic cross from the center back for teammate, Gonzalo Higuain’s 2nd goal goal of the game during the 41st minute of play. Real Madrid would go on to completely embarrass struggling C.D. Tenerife with a final score of 5-1.
Marcelo – (Real Madrid) – Marcelo had a perfect through ball that would line up Gonzalo Higuain for his first goal in the 29th minute of play. This was the first impressive play of many to come during the 5-1 beating that Real Madrid put on Tenerife this past weekend.
Ron Vlaar – (Feyenoord) – Feyenoord’s Ron Vlaar scored a 90th minute game-winning goal and late-game heroics were enough to steal the victory away from home team Groningen this weekend.
Midfielders:
Maurice Edu – (Glasgow Rangers) – USA’s Maurice Edu scored the game-winner against the Glasgow Rangers’ bitter rivals, Glasgow Celtic. This was a big-time goal for the American. The Glasgow Rangers currently sit in 1st place in the Scottish Premier League.
Jaime Valdes – (Atalanta) – Jaime Valdes would score off of long run to net Atalanta’s lone goal against Serie A powerhouse AC Milan this weekend during their 3-1 defeat. Valdes’ goal was one of the few bright spots in the day for a struggling league’s Atalanta.
Franck Ribery – (Bayern Munich) – Franck Ribery had an absolutely stunning finish and game-winning goal against Hamburg during Bayern Munich’s 1-0 victory this weekend. With the win, Bayern Munich would secure their top spot in Bundesliga with their 52 points.
Hatem Ben Arfa – (Marseille) – Marseille’s Hatem Ben Arfa had a fantastic first touch followed by a smart finish against Paris Saint Germain this past weekend during the 3-0 Marseille shutout victory. Marseille currently sits only 3 points behind the French Ligue leader, Bordeaux.
Forwards:
Mounir El Hamdaoui – (AZ Alkmaar) – Mounir El Hamdaoui had an impressive outing as he went on to score all three goals with his impressive hat-trick this weekend against Vitesse Arnhem during AZ Alkmaar’s big victory in the Dutch league this past weekend.
Gonzalo Higuain – (Real Madrid) – Gonzalo scored an incredible two goals against C.D. Tenerife during their 5-1 pounding this weekend. Higuain netted his first goal in the 29th minute and then dropped in another in the 41st minute. His two goals sparked the following three that followed.
