SUAREZ FACES A ONE-GAME SUSPENSION FOR HIS HANDBALL
Uruguay’s Luis Suarez has been suspended for one game by FIFA for his handball at the end of their quarterfinal match against Ghana that denied. Apparently, Suarez thought that the old “goalie switch” call kids use on playgrounds in last minute situations to try and save a goal would fly on the world’s biggest stage.
The handball heard round the world has sparked some interesting chatter amongst soccer fanatics. Personally, I think that even if it did keep Ghana from advancing, he did what he had to do to keep his squad and country in the tournament. He has been penalized for what he did, and now it’s time to move on, folks.
If I was a betting man, I would stack all of my chips in favor of the Dutch… whether they were to take on Uruguay or Ghana, I think I can see Wesley Sneijder & co. sitting pretty for the final match.
FIFA’s panel of experts ruled on Saturday that Suarez was guilty of “denying the opposite team a clear goal-scoring opportunity.”
Suarez will be sidelined for their semifinal match against the Netherlands on Tuesday, but will be available if the soccer gods smile down on Uruguay and they come away with a “W.”
Following the match when Suarez was questioned about his handball decision, he said “Truth is, it was worth it.” Can’t say I disagree to be honest with you.
