HOLLAND CRUSH BRAZIL’S DREAMS OF ANOTHER WORLD CUP CROWN
For the first time since 1998, Holland has advanced to the semifinals and will now face the winner of the Uruguay-Ghana match in Cape Town this Tuesday.
The Brazilians fell to the Dutch after heading to the break up 1-0 after a 10th minute Robinho score. The Netherlands’ two-goal second half heroics snapped Brazil’s streak of never losing in World Cup play when leading at the break.
After coming out for the second half up on the Dutch, Brazil’s Felipe Melo scored an equalizing own goal in the 53rd minute of play. This marked Brazil’s first own-goal in their 97-match World Cup history.
Then, in the 68th minute, Holland’s Wesley Sneijder headed a ball into the back of the net after it was skipped across the box by Dirk Kuyt. Sneijder, standing at a towering 5’7″ is now the shortest player to score off of a header in this year’s World Cup tournament.
“It just slipped through from my bald head and it was a great feeling,” Sneijder said.
Five minutes later, Felipe Melo was issued a straight red card for stomping on Arjen Robben’s leg following a tackle. Needless to say, Felipe Melo’s own-goal and red card put a bit of a damper on his squad’s second half.
“It was an amazing game. I think we showed the whole world how we can play,” Sneijder said. “Finally we won, we beat Brazil.”
Holland having won every match of the tournament thus far, has now extended their unbeaten streak to 24 games.
