ENGLAND’S RIGHT BACKS
The talk of England players and the World Cup is always a hot topic, like always, injuries arise, loss of form, or someone makes an unexpected run for a place in the final 23.
Arguably, Glen Johnson has been England’s first choice, and Wes Brown of Manchester United has done a solid job too. However Johnson has only just returned to fitness after just over two months of being out with a knee injury. And Brown recently went down with a broken bone in his foot. Brown is expected to miss the next 6 to 8 weeks.
Which brings up the question, with injuries rife, who will replace one or both first choices? Manchester City’s Micah Richards can play there, he has done so often for his club, but as of late played at the heart of City’s defence with lapses in concentration. This does not help Richards’ cause. He is a player with undoubted talent and huge promise, but is this World Cup a little too soon? Time will tell, and City’s pursuit for the coveted 4th spot will be interesting as the possibility is tight. Defences will come in to play, mistakes are even more under the microscope.
Which leaves England with only one other viable option. . . . With Wes Brown out injured, and a return from injury for Gary Neville, the old man of Manchester United could force his way into England’s party. Obviously this will only happen if either Johnson or Brown are struggling, but again, other than Richards’ promise, I can’t think of a better right back for England, what he lacks in speed he makes up with his experience, leadership, and positional sense.
