CARLES PUYOL SENDS SPAIN INTO THE FINAL
Sunday afternoon, Spain will take on the Dutch at Soccer City in Johannesburg in the World Cup 2010 final, thanks to a fantastic goal scored by defender Carles Puyol in the 73rd minute.
Those German counterattacks that crushed the English and Argentine back lines didn’t happen today as the Spaniards stood their ground.
Spain striker Fernando Torres typically punishes opposing defenses, but has been struggling to recover his form since undergoing knee surgery in April. He was dropped from Spain’s starting lineup this afternoon, but Spain seemed to manage just fine. Possession for the majority of the game was controlled by Spain, making Germany look almost frantic when they had the ball.
Puyol was absolutely fantastic today. There is just no debating that. Aside from scoring the game-winning goal, the 32 year-old defender was everywhere causing nothing but problems and confusion for the Germany offense.
“This is one of the greatest moments for Spain, for us to be in the final of the World Cup, it’s history,” Spain striker David Villa said. “And we want to make more history in the final.”
Spain has lost just two games since November 2006, one of which was a shocker to Switzerland in the first match of the group-stage. For much of the past four years, they have been considered Europe’s best team, and the world’s best team for that matter.
“We worked hard to get here and now we have made the final,” Villa said. “It’s a great thing.”
Spain will take on the Netherlands this Sunday afternoon at 2:30pm EST. Tune into ESPN to catch the World Cup 2010 final.
