A NEW DAWN FOR ARGENTINA?
On Tuesday Argentina take on World Champions Spain. This is set to be a very exciting prospect, but one with huge expectations from both nations. While it will be a “friendly” it will be Spain’s first major test since the World Cup final against Holland (no disrespect to Mexico and Liechtenstein).
As for Argentina, it is a huge marker of how far they have come in a short period of time. Since a disappointing World Cup, Diego Maradona has gone, and arguably the man who should have taken charge in the first place, Sergio Batista will be the man to build the Argentinians up again.
Sergio Batista is only the caretaker manager, but a positive result against Spain would go along way to him getting the permanent spot. He has also brought back Javier Zanetti, Esteban Cambiasso, and Andrés D’Alessandro, amongst others, players that were surprisingly axed from the 2010 World Cup.
While he has many to choose from, he needs to build a squad to challenge and gel for the Copa America, and then kick on for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. No doubt some of these older players won’t be in his long term plans, but if he can really get Messi, Sergio Agüero, Gonzalo Higuaín, Éver Banega, Ángel di María, and Fernando Gago playing at the potential on offer, then you could see them being together for the next two World Cups.
For now though, we’d settle for an amazing spectacle, and Sergio Batista given four years to build up a potential championship team.
