International footballing superstar and captain of England’s national team, Rio Ferdinand footwear’s label Five is preparing to release its second ever collection. Previously named No.1 on GQ’s Best-Dressed List, Rio insists on maintaining a high involvement with the design, ensuring that he is more than just a name to sell products designed by others as per so many other celebrity endorsed brands. GQ magazine recently sat down with the man himself to discuss Five’s foundations, Rio’s favourite stores, designers, influences and more. Keep checking back for more in-depth looks at the forthcoming collection as well as release information. Some excerpts of the interview are seen below.

My dad’s a tailor so I’ve always been around the rag trade. I used to go to his factories and play on the big rolls of material and see people cutting the different shapes for suits. My favourite one he used to do had a jacket with a waistcoat sewn inside, an all-in-one type thing. When he went out I’d put on his blazer, his brogues and his Marvin Gaye vinyl.

When I was growing up I was big into Ralph Lauren, Armani jeans, Stone Island jeans, Valentino jeans. That was what the kids were into. With a pair of diamond socks.

With my first pay packet, I went to Gucci and bought a pair of loafers, suede ones, that I used to clean over a boiled kettle with a wire toothbrush. I’ve always had a liking for threads.

Nowadays I’m more about the fit, the cut. It could be any brand. I don’t care really, I’ll go anywhere: Topshop, a second-hand shop. As long as the gear’s cut to suit my body then I’m happy. It’s not really about the name.

One mistake I think men make is when they’re trying to do too much what’s in fashion at the time. There might be two or three things in and they try and rock it all together. If you go into your own, what you like, what’s good for you and your shape and size, more so than what’s good for everybody else, then you’ll be all right.

The most talked-about outfit I wore was probably the suit I signed for Manchester United in. It was a white linen suit with a black pinstripe. It was one of those that don’t photograph well but when you’re there it looks better on. That’s what I’ll tell you now, anyway…! That was another Italian brand, an underground one. I got it from Vertice, a shop on London’s South Molton Street, near Browns.

I’m a watch freak. I’ve got an AP concept watch that I love. I’ve never seen anyone with it on before. It’s got the chronograph but you wind it a different way. It’s not your normal-looking watch. I’ve got a few watches. I keep them in a safe, not at my house. I don’t people knocking on my door for watches. They won’t be there.

My style hero is Tom Ford. What he did at Gucci was magnificent, the way he rejuvenated the male brand especially, and then he’s obviously gone on his own and took it that step further again with his really beautiful cuts of clothes, especially the jackets. His shirts and ties are beautiful. I just like everything he does really. His glasses are really nice. He’s expensive, that’s the only thing.

The color that US International Jozy Altidore will be rocking at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Official Adidas Press Release

Herzogenaurach, 11th May 2010 — Today, adidas unveiled the lightest football boot ever produced, the F50 adiZero. The revolutionary new boot, weighing an astonishing 5.8 ounces, will be worn by the FIFA World Player of the Year, Lionel Messi, during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Messi will be the first player to wear the distinctive chameleon purple, white and electricity colorway at the tournament commencing on June 11 in South Africa.

“I am amazed at how light the new F50 is; I can barely feel them on my feet,” said Messi. “Speed on the pitch is a really important part of my game and wearing the world’s lightest boot will hopefully make me faster and enhance my performance during the most important games of the year!”

The need for speed in modern football has never been greater, where millimetres or a fraction of a second can make the difference between winning and losing. adidas has responded to this athlete request by reinventing the rules of speed and turning the iconic F50 boot into the lightest adidas boot ever made.

Aubrey Dolan, Senior Product Manager for adidas Football comments “Players like Lionel Messi consistently told us they wanted boots that would enable them to be faster. Players wanted to be first to the ball, so we decided that the best way forward was to make a lightweight product which could be used at the highest level.”

The F50 adiZero will be worn by players during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. The chameleon purple, white and electricity boot will be worn exclusively by Lionel Messi with Steven Pienaar (South Africa), Jozy Altidore (U.S.A), Shunsake Nakamura (Japan), Salomon Kalou (Ivory Coast), Arjen Robben (Holland) and Lukas Podolski (Germany) wearing the sun, black and collegiate gold colorway and David Villa (Spain), Samir Nasri (France), Jermain Defoe (England) and Johan Vonlanthen (Switzerland) wearing the black and sun version. The boot will hit retail on May 24th 2010 in adidas Sport Performance stores globally, as well as www.shopadidas.com and select sports retailers around the world.

HOW IT WORKS: THE SCIENCE

The F50 adiZero has been revolutionized, incorporating the industry’s lightest fabrics and leading technologies to reach the ultimate weight of 5.8 ounces. To achieve the target weight, the boot has been developed on a lightweight last which offers a wider footbed and heel to distribute forces optimally throughout the boot – which is critical in a lightweight product.

*5.8 ouncesat US size 9

The sleek new SprintSkin upper has been created using an innovative single layer microfibre Polyurethane (PU) synthetic to reduce the overall weight and to ensure the shoe fits like a second skin increasing the comfort of the boot. The F50 adiZero uses asymmetric parallel lacing which creates a large, clean kicking surface for optimal ball contact while a perforated Ultra Light insole has been developed to reduce weight and increase speed.

The innovative new last is complemented by a new exclusive Sprint Frame outsole which is crafted using three-dimensional bridges to create stability and support in the midfoot. Taking inspiration from a running sprint spike, the outsole features a new revolutionary triangular stud configuration which provides maximum acceleration and optimum support for the critical lateral and medial movements. Football is not only about straight-line speed.

To add stability and to support the player, the upper features an internal network of Thermo Polyurethane (TPU) bands, as well as a single TPU bottom frame on the boot which offers stability and support in the lateral and medial movements and protects the upper against abrasion providing a sleek, stylish, iconic look.
